Someone was asking around for a developer, and I was referred. I was originally told the guy had a big budget and could pay the highest I have ever been paid before. However, after sending him an email and getting a reply, that doesn’t sound like the case.
The thing that makes me nervous is the guy seems to have found a hobby, grown it to a business, but never scaled it too big. It’s a great business, but not something that can support a full time staff. The other developer I would be working with has a full time job, too.
Working on this project is basically just hobby to pass the time. However, the husband and wife team that started the company are really protective of what they have. I feel like this could result in a similar situation where I am not given enough access to do anything for fear that I will ruin it all.
Also, this doesn’t fit with the type of work I have typically been doing. I mainly focus on ecommerce sites, and this isn’t that. Even though it will pay decent, I wouldn’t be terribly upset if I didn’t get the work.
The client work I am currently doing has a few months left and then will end. Getting something else to fill in that gap would be nice, though, since the client work is a significant part of my income now. We scheduled a time to talk, so I will wait until then to make a decision.
