Today, I got to go to the police station and get fingerprinted. Client work will soon involve deploying to the production server, and that requires an extensive background check…including being fingerprinted.
This seemed to be a real inconvenience, but then I was thinking, the amount of time it took to get the access I needed combined with the background check and fingerprints, the ramp up time for anyone to replace met is far too great to make it worth it.
Unlike last year where my contract was ended and then brought back, they really won’t be able to end the contract and conveniently bring anyone back without restarting the whole process. Even hiring someone new will be a real pain.
With the project only expected to last about 3 more months, it’s coming up to the point where they won’t be able to get anyone else hired, get the access they need, and then get them up to speed on what the code does in time for them to make any impact.
I went along with it mainly for the security in knowing it won’t be easy to replace me. Plus, with the project manager out of the way, the work is far better than it used to be.
I had to get up early this morning to make it to the police station in time for my appointment. I did fall asleep in the afternoon, though.
I didn’t really get anything else accomplished.
