Everything is ready for the meeting in Chicago. I got the plane tickets booked and receipt submitted. Now, I just have to wait for Wednesday. Also, I got a little more client work. A friend found some work that needed and knew someone who could do the work. He just needed someone to be in the middle.
I agreed to do it, and then kind of forgot about it. It turns out that he was able to get the project, and the person did the work. I got to submit the invoice, and then took a cut of the money.
It’s the first client work I subcontracted out successfully. My cut isn’t that great. It was, however, no work on my part at all. I didn’t find the client and I didn’t find the subcontractor. I just had to submit the invoice.
This type of work would be scalable since it’s not limited on how much work I personally can get done. This would be something I would like to eventually pursue, but I don’t really have all the details figured out.
For one, the work that was done isn’t something I am particularly strong in. I would hate to try to get a project I couldn’t personally do, then try to find someone who could actually do it, and then if they didn’t complete it, I would be stuck.
More than likely, I wouldn’t even do what I am currently doing. The problem with what I currently do is it’s a specialized skill that can’t just be learned with 3 to 6 months. That’s really how I can charge more for my time.
That would also make it really hard to find other subcontractors who could do the work. I would likely try to get some work that is a little related, but also a little more easier/generic to be able to find more people capable of doing the work.
Right now, though, I don’t really think I am at the point where I need to worry about that. Even if I get this client, I will only have 2 that I am actively working on with one likely ending the next few months.
It seems pretty safe that by the time I find another client, one that I have already had will drop off.
